Your home can be a hazardous place for your furry companions. Dogs are naturally curious and can scrounge their way to an endless range of dangerous items in your house. While safeguarding your property is an important consideration, don't forget to keep your dog's safety at the fore when dog-proofing your house. 

The kitchen can be an especially tricky space. Dogs are naturally drawn to the smell of food, and many household items can be unsafe for them. Be sure to keep such items, like garlic or chocolate, off the counters. Try and store them securely in spaces that are inaccessible for dogs. In addition to food, kitchen items can also prove dangerous for dogs. Dogs have been known to chew on everything from sponges to bottle caps, so be sure to keep small objects and choking hazards far from reach. 

The trash can also be alluring for dogs and may expose them to items that could harm them. Keep your trash securely covered, and lock it away if feasible. 

Washrooms can also be a dangerous space for dogs. Their confined nature provides easy access to dangerous materials like soaps, chemicals, and medicines to curious pups. Keep detergents, toiletries, and cleaning supplies stowed away in a place your dog can't reach. Shut the toilet lid so that your dog doesn't drink from the toilet bowl. Miscellaneous choking hazards like hair ties and rubber bands can also be dangerous, so make sure they're stored safely. If you have a washing machine or dryer installed, be sure to keep the doors shut at all times. Your dog may be inclined to curl up and nap there. 

Cover electrical cords from appliances like lamps and TVs so that your dog doesn't chew on them. Unplug unused cords and put them away if they're not needed. If your dog is partial to jumping atop furniture, then make sure breakable items are kept off tables and cabinets. Some plants can be toxic to dogs. Make sure such plants are kept elevated and well out of the reach of your dog. Try not to keep windows open when your dog is unsupervised. While they can be a great way to let ventilation in and offer a glimpse outdoors, your dog may be inclined to jump out if something piques their interest. 

Be mindful that dogs can chew on anything, so keep your valuables like earphones, jewelry and wallet stowed safely out of reach. Try and understand your dog and their behaviors to effectively dog-proof your space. Even seemingly benign objects like safety pins or plastic bags can lead to serious mishaps. All it takes is one misplaced moment of curiosity. So make sure to be comprehensive in your efforts to ensure that your home is safe for both humans and dogs.
